When someone is going through a tough time we often try to comfort them by saying things like: You deserve better. You deserve respect or love. You deserve a better job or you deserve to live your best life.
The question is, What do they (we) actually deserve?
Is telling someone they ‘deserve’ better a true statement? Is it actually a honouring thing to say?
